Daycare photography is not just about pictures; it’s about capturing this moment in time. If you've never had a child in school before or your daycare has never offered picture day and you don't know what to expect, this guide will equip you with everything you need to know, how to prepare, and what to wear for your child’s photo day.
What is daycare photography?
Daycare photography in Vancouver involves hiring a professional to visit the daycare and take pictures of the children.
Before going to a daycare they provide me a roster of all the children. Each child has their own personalized QR code form. This form is then distributed to families where they can use that QR code to access their images. If the images aren't yet available they can register for notifications for when the images are ready.
Parents can anticipate various poses on a neutral backdrop (I provide beige, light blue or dark blue as options for the daycare to choose). The aim is to deliver high-quality images that families can cherish with no props to distract from your child. The portraits will certainly reflect who your child is in this moment. And as parents, we know these moments are fleeting.
What Parents Should Know
Booking and Scheduling
Most daycares provide advance notice for photo days, so it’s crucial to mark this date on your calendar. Your photographer will also reach out to you ahead of time to remind you of the upcoming photo day.
Communication with the Photographer
If you have a child with special needs, letting the photographer know beforehand helps create a smoother experience and results in better pictures. Often times the teachers or support workers are there to assist, but if this is a concern for you please reach out to your photographer directly. You can share some tips on what lights them up.
Understanding the Packages
Photographers often offer multiple packages, including options for prints and digital images. I offer families everything from a-la-carte prints to packages that include multiple poses with digital files included.
How to Prepare Your Child For Photo Day
Choosing the Right Outfit for Picture Day
What your child wears can greatly impact the photos. Here are some tips to ensure they look their best:
Comfort is Key: If your child is comfortable, they'll naturally behave and smile more in their photos. Soft, flexible clothing usually works well.
Avoid Busy Patterns: Stick to solid or subtle colors. Bright colours like red, blue, or soft pastels can make your child pop without distracting from their face. Layering is also a great idea!
What to avoid: I recommend staying away from neon colours or graphic t shirts
What Happens on Photo Day?
The Photo Session
During the session, the photographer will guide children through different poses. If you choose to stay with your child during the photo session please stay calm and positive, as your energy influences your child. And allow the photographer to direct your child. If there are too many people directing, it can become overwhelming for your child.
Expect a mix of posed and candid shots, both styles highlight your child’s personality.
Viewing and Ordering Photos
Once the photo session wraps up, parents will receive a link on their QR code form. This is your chance to select your favourite photos and choose the right package once the images are ready.
You will receive your digital purchases immediately to the email address you log in with and any print orders are delivered to your daycare centre in a batch and usually arrive 4 weeks after the order deadline.
Do siblings get photographed together?
Yes! This is something the daycare will arrange with your photographer. I offer centres the ability to get sibling portraits. Each child is photographed separately and then together. This is what really separates a boutique photographer from the large-volume style corporate photography businesses.
Final Thoughts
Vancouver’s daycare photography is an opportunity to capture the fleeting moments of your child’s early years. By being informed about the process, choosing the right clothing, and knowing what to expect, you can contribute to a memorable experience for both you and your child.
