  • Pitt Meadows Motherhood Photography | Pitt Lake Dike Family Session

Want to know how to get the best family photos? The best tip I can give you might come as a surprise... Don't aim for perfection Because perfection will happen when you're not trying. Rest easy, mama. Your family does NOT need to be perfect... or even well behaved for that matter. I'm a mother to two young kids (both under 3) so yea. I understand toddlers and their logic (ahem, lack thereof)! I know how to talk to kids and you can trust that I know how to get gorgeous pictures of even the wildest little ones. That being said, here are some more tips to get the most out of your family photos. Tips to achieve amazing family photos Connect with your photographer. The more you're open to communicating with your photographer, the more rapport you will build with each other. That's a key component to being comfortable in front of the camera. Whether you have questions about location, wardrobe or even weather, feel free to reach out. The only person who wants your photos to be amazing more than you is your photographer! Trust me ;) Relax. Let your kids roam, play and be themselves. If the photographer wants them to do something else, they will let them know. Trust your photographer. The more you worry and tell your kids to smile, look at the camera or how to pose, I'm sorry to say, the worse your photos will be. Eeeek. I said it! The Lower Mainland gets cold...so dress for the weather! Dress appropriately. This sounds so obvious but sometimes it's a good reminder! Please choose function OVER fashion. Yes, looking nice is great but if you are cold it will show in the pictures. We live in the Lower Mainland where it gets cold...so dress for the weather! A location that's often requested is at the dyke in Pitt Meadows - it's in a valley of mountains and gets super windy. If the kids are cold they will not be happy and trust me, it's not worth it. Please put a jacket, touque or scarf on yourself AND your kids on those cold fall/ winter days. Want to know something cool?! When you book with me I give you a session and style guide so that you're as ready as you can be for your photo session. Reach out , I'd love to chat about your vision for your next photo session! I serve Maple Ridge and surrounding cities in the Tri-Cities and Fraser Valley. Check out my work here and here . I can't wait to hear from you ♡ xo Mel

  • 3 Easy Steps to Setup Your Home for a Newborn Photo Shoot

How to make your home photo-shoot ready As someone who knows what it's like to buy a home, get married, move and have a baby in the same year, I know how valuable time is! If you're trying to decide between sleeping for a few extra minutes or cleaning your home, please choose sleep every time. In-home is becoming one of the most popular locations for your lifestyle newborn photos in the Lower Mainland, and for good reason. The comfort of being in your own home paired with having easy access to everything you need for your newborn (and toddler if you have one of those, too!) make it an amazing place to host your own family photo session. If you're thinking - "but omg Mel, my home is messy and it looks nothing like the photos I've been admiring online" I can assure you that making your home Pinterest worthy is not important. Like seriously NOT important. What you see online is curated! I've photographed families that were renovating their home AND they had just moved in. Would you be able to tell from the pictures? Not a chance. Boxes were shifted to the side, laundry was hidden away and what do you know?! Their house is Pinterest worthy after all! What time should you schedule your in-home lifestyle newborn session? 10am is usually the best time of day for this type of photo shoot. It gives soft light and, bonus! It's usually a good time if toddlers are going to be involved in the session. And if you know toddlers, they run the show and we're all on their schedule ;) Considering an in-home lifestyle newborn portrait session ? Check out a glimpse of some of my work and get inspired! 3 steps to setup your home for lifestyle newborn photos Here are some tips to make the most of your time with your lifestyle photographer when they come to your home: Turn off all overhead lights Open all blinds/ curtains Put a simple comforter/ duvet on your bed. I recommend using white. Again, I understand what it's like to be a new mama and want everything to be perfect. It's wild though, in those first weeks when your baby is home the exhaustion is real . It's consuming, isn't it? There are some ways to help with sleep deprivation that may then help you find the energy to arrange your home the way you dreamed of. Having a baby? Check out my work and gimme a shout !

  • Why Documenting Your Pregnancy with Maternity Photos is so Important

Four reasons why you should document your pregnancy with maternity photography Why should you document your pregnancy with maternity photos ? "It's been a long, arduous journey" is something I hear time and time again as to why mamas are booking their newborn photo sessions . You want to document your first moments with your new baby because getting to that point has been a struggle. What about documenting your journey. Your vulnerable and epic journey of creating life. Real talk. Pregnancy wasn't really my thing. I didn't feel glowing and beautiful. And how about those symptoms ?! All this being said: 1. Document your pregnancy with a maternity session to remember what it was like being pregnant As much as you believe these moments during your pregnancy are unforgettable - life is busy and the moments are fleeting. Unless you take the time to book a photo session, they will be distant memories soon. You are literally making a human from scratch. How neat is that?! It's one of life's many miracles and you're doing it. Every time you look at your baby you will see their sweet fingers and toes and know that you made them. I have two kids (2.5 and 4 years old now) and I still have phantom kicks . Where it feels like there's a baby in my tummy kicking. I 100% know there's no way that's possible because my husband got snipped after our second was born! And though I didn't love being pregnant - this is one thing I did love. The vulnerable parts of being pregnant is not knowing if your baby is ok. It felt like my kids were saying "hey mama, I'm doing good." Have you felt that way? Like 'omg I haven't felt my baby move in a while' then you sit there and stare at your tummy waiting for the kick. Then it comes and you breathe. A big deep breath. 2. Maternity photographs are a snap shot of what being pregnant is really like Getting maternity photos done is a perfect way to capture a snap shot of what being pregnant is like. Candid moments of you talking to your belly, snuggling with your partner or having your older child listening for baby happen in an instant. Take this moment to celebrate that you're doing something that is legitimately miraculous. Then, when you're done thinking of that take a moment to inhale . Then exhale. YOU are creating life. Let's document it during a photo shoot together. Before your newborn makes their way into the world, take some time to capture and honour the connection you already share. This time is special. Partners, kiddos, and pets can be in these photos, too. That way their stories are shared along with yours and it can make the whole experience unforgettable a great way to tell your family's story. If we've had a similar pregnancy experience, where pregnancy hasn't left you feeling your most confident self, I want you to know that you're not alone. A lot of my clients have said that maternity photos aren't on their to-do list because they want it to be about the baby instead. Here's the thing: YOU. WILL. NOT . REGRET. IT. Not once has someone said "oh, wow. I really wish I didn't get those photos done. Now I have a way to remember these moments forever. What a bummer." Here's what my clients say after their sessions: "Meliza left me feeling absolutely beautiful and confident" 3. Maternity photos will allow you to show your kids what you looked like with them in your tummy Maternity photos are worthwhile memories to create and then look back on with your kids as they get older. Have you ever asked your mom to see if she had any photos of herself with you in her tummy? I have. She was in her living room on the couch (the brown, flower velour couch from the 70s - you know the one, right?) that I grew up jumping on. Nowadays, we show our daughter her newborn album as her bedtime story. It has my maternity portraits and her newborn portraits combined and she LOVES seeing my tummy with her in it. 4. Maternity photography is the perfect opportunity to document the beginnings of your family Don't miss the opportunity to document your pregnancy with a photo shoot. The story about your journey to motherhood. The story about your struggles and your triumphs. Want to know what a maternity experience is like? I come to your home a couple of hours before your session with treats in hand. You get to relax and get pampered while I get you ready with a professional makeup application. I studied at Blanche MacDonald and worked at M.A.C for many years. You're in good hands. We'll chat and get to know each other even more than we have during the prep for your session. We'll share stories, maybe we'll cry together but we will definitely laugh together. You'll feel your most confident self and I'll photograph you in the place you're most comfortable - home. Scheduling a maternity photo session should be on every mommy-to-be's to do list. Don't let the moment pass you by. You are important and you should be celebrated, mama. A note about family , maternity and newborn sessions; they book several months in advance. For newborn sessions , please be sure to contact me while you are still pregnant. • How to Include Your Dog in Your Photo Session

A Guide: 5 Ways to Include Your Dog in Your Photo Session When clients ask if their dog can be included in their family photo session, the answer is always yes! Your furry friend is always welcome! Here are few easy tips to help you set your pup up for success when bringing your dog to your newborn photo session. 1. Prepare your dog for the photo session Take your dog for a walk before your photo shoot. It helps the dog tire out a little bit - they're kind of like toddlers in that way. Dogs can get SUPER excited that a new person is in their home making them feel like they need to 'show off'. If they tire out a bit before the session it'll make it easier for everyone to keep your doggo calm and want to participate! 2. Choose a comfortable location for your photo shoot Consider having the photo session in a familiar and comfortable location for your dog, such as your home. This will help them feel more at ease. 3. Bring dog treats and toys to the photo session Use treats and toys: Bring treats and toys to the photo session to help keep your dog focused and engaged. This can be especially helpful if you want to get some shots of your dog interacting with the newborn. Having the toy handy allows me to capture your doggo's attention and get those sweet puppy dog eyes looking right where we want them to look! It's a good way to reward your sweet dog for doing what we ask them to do. For example in this portrait → I had everyone look at baby and I got mama to say the doggo's name so it would appear as though even the dog was looking at baby. Good job doggie. Here's a treat! 4. Get your dog groomed before your portrait session This is a special occasion. You're doing what you can to look your best and you want the whole family to, also! If going to the groomers isn't possible, brush your dog's fur and make sure they're clean enough to join you on the couch or bed. Here's a list of some of the best dog groomers in the Vancouver area! 5. Be patient with your dog during your photo shoot Be patient: It's important to be patient and take breaks as needed during the photo session. If your dog is getting anxious or restless, take a break to give them some attention and let them relax. Overall, including your dog in your newborn photo session can be a fun and memorable experience. Just be sure to prepare your dog, choose a comfortable location, and be patient during the session! Schedule your maternity session early in your pregnancy Make sure you have time to prepare yourself for this special occasion. It’s an occasion for you to pamper yourself and be the centre of attention - something that you won’t get as much of when baby arrives. This brings me to the next point... Get your hair and makeup done for your maternity photoshoot If your photographer doesn’t offer hair and makeup as a part of the package - make sure you schedule that in! Look and feel your best for your photoshoot. Best time to get pregnancy pictures Your maternity photographer will definitely know when it would be best to schedule your session - but I recommend booking your session between weeks 31-34. This is when your bump is there but you can still move around comfortably. Also, if you book it too far into your pregnancy… you never know! Baby might decide to come early and you would’ve missed your opportunity to document your pregnancy! What to wear for your maternity photos I would recommend choosing maternity clothes that make you feel beautiful and comfortable! In this photo shoot the mama decided to wear a simple bra and jeans. If that's not your style - try pairing the bra with a cardigan and tights. If your photo shoot is happening outside - consider a maternity dress. One that's flowing and has a lot of movement. Some popular brands for maternity dresses are Baltic Born and Bobbypin's Curiosities (where you can rent dresses!) What should your husband wear to your photoshoot? Something that may happen is that your hubby will put on a bit of weight during your pregnancy. Some say it's empathy weight ;) Whatever it is, make sure your man tries his clothes on AHEAD of time. The last thing you want is stretched fabric on his tummy or buttons that look like they're about to pop. Here's a link to an 'Idea Pin' with some inspiration for ya. Get rest before your session! Be well rested and ready to go. It never hurts to start the day when you've had a great sleep, does it? Bring sentimental items you would like included Do you have a printout from your sonogram ? Duration of a Newborn Photography Session: What to Expect When Planning Your Shoot Generally speaking, newborn portrait sessions last between 2-2.5 hours , depending on the needs of your baby (feeding, changing diapers, etc). Each baby is very different and because I use baby-led-posing each session will be fluid and depend on the needs of you and your baby. Your newborn will be photographed with your immediate family and alone with each of the family members and then by themselves, too. Have a family pet you want to include, let's include them! • School Picture Day: How To Prepare Your Child

Tips for picture day at school in Vancouver Your preschool or daycare is hosting picture day and your little one has never had professional photos taken before! Well, at least not without you there! Here's a quick guide to help you prepare your child for their photo day debut. Pictured below: a child from Conscious Kids Care in Maple Ridge. You love being involved ... You want to be there to smooth their hair, wipe their face of their morning snack and give them a hug to say that everything will be 'ok'. I'm one of those parents, too. I have two kids, they are 2.5 and 4 years old. I can assure you that what you want from your children on photo day, is exactly what I want for them, too. Here's a quick guide to help you prepare your children for photo day. How can you prepare for photo day Your kid’s preschool picture day is finally here! Getting your little one ready for picture day can be an exciting task, especially if it’s their first time being photographed at school. I'm here to help you and your toddler get those frame-worthy photos to treasure. Check out these tips for ways to make sure your little one is ready to smile for the camera! #1: Keep your kids in the loop #2: Pack mess-free snacks #3: What to wear for picture day #1: Keep your kids in the loop If your kids are anything like mine - they do not like surprises. At least not when it comes to anything other than candy or toys! Make sure you let them know ahead of time that picture day is coming and there will be a lady taking their picture with a big camera. If you find me on social media it can help to share it with your kids. They love knowing what to expect. It's actually why they love watching the same shows over and over - because it boosts their confidence knowing that they predicted something correctly! You can find me on Instagram most often here , show them my face and they'll be delighted to recognize me when it's their turn for photos. #2: Pack mess-free snacks Do you usually pack yogurt for your kid's lunch? Try and avoid things that drip or mark up outfits on picture day. Things to avoid: ketchup, nut butters, jelly, yogurt and cheese puffs - cheese puffs make a heck of a mess! If none of these things are avoidable, pack them a bib or an extra shirt. On the topic of bibs: is your little one teething and constantly drooling all over every nice shirt they have? Put them in a bib and ask the teacher to leave it on until photos start. That way their outfit won't be covered in drool - though it would certainly tell the story about this time in their life, wouldn't it? #3: What to wear for picture day Your photographer may have reached out (or perhaps the school did letting you know about picture day) and let you know about the backdrop they'll be using for photo day. This is a helpful tool in planning out what your child will wear! Try and compliment the backdrop and not fade into it. For example, I often use a light, beige backdrop - solid white shirts are very similar and don't look great with this backdrop. However, tan, mustard, brown, green and blue look fantastic. See the picture above . General rules of thumb when planning what to wear for picture day: Solid colours (not white) or tasteful patterns No neon No graphic T's Layer (wear a vest or a cardigan) Packing your child a backup outfit is a great idea, too. In case their outfit gets dirty or messy during the early part of the day. Need a new outfit for your kiddo? I usually recommend that families look at Lagoon Baby , Jax and Lennon , Zara or Old Navy for trendy outfits and inspiration. Do you have any tips on how to prepare for school picture day? I'd love to know your fave tips! Share in the comments. If you're seeing these portraits and are wondering how your kid's daycare or preschool can start offering these gorgeous portraits - get in touch. Did you know that I give 10% of profits back to each school that I photograph. It's a great way to fundraise and an even better way for parents to get school photos they will love! Have a look at my info page and pass it on to your daycare's Director. If they book the centre in for picture day with me, there's a special something in it for you! Small businesses offer a more personalized service experience Small businesses often offer a more personalized service experience, as they serve fewer schools and are able to give each school or daycare more individualized attention. The other great part about this service for parents is that they can hire the photographer to do their family photos as well. Young children often take a while to warm up to a photographer. Having that familiarity with the photographer leads to a smooth photo session and even better use of time - since your photographer won't have to spend as much time building rapport. Some examples of communication with a Daycare Director and an independent photographer go like this: "Thank you so so so much again Mel for your AMAZING work!!!! We have had great feedback already!!" "We have soooooo many happy parents sending messages!!” 2. Small businesses are more flexible and able to adapt Small businesses may be more flexible and able to adapt to changing needs or requests. 3. Supporting Small Business Builds the Local Economy and Supports the Community Hiring a small business can help support the local community and economy. What better way to build the local economy than to support a small business where you live? "Small businesses push economic growth and the local economy by opening up employment opportunities locally." Forbes When you shop local, your money is more likely to be reinvested back into the community you know and love. In fact, I give 10% of profits back to each school I photograph. It's a great way to fundraise and an even better way for parents to get school photos they will love! 4. Small businesses have specialized expertise One of the perks of hiring a small business to do your school photos would be that you're getting an expert in the field. Someone whose specialty is children's portraiture - rather than someone who does a variety of genres of photography and doesn't specialize in on particular area. Small business owners bring a unique perspective that larger companies don't offer. Have a look at my info page and pass it on to the Director. If they book the centre in for picture day with me, there's a special something in it for you! 5. Small businesses can compete on cost Small businesses may be able to offer you competitive pricing because they have lower overhead costs. We have more questions about hiring a small business to do our school photos Perhaps you're not ready to move your school or daycare to an independent photographer. That's ok. Here are some ways to test the water without making any big commitments: INVITE THE PHOTOGRAPHER FOR A WALK THROUGH . Invite a local photographer (offering volume photography) to your centre. They can show you samples of their products and even give you a run through of the system they use. This would take all of 30 minutes. Want me to come by? I'd be happy to! Reach out here . DO A POP-UP . Were you impressed with the photographer you invited but still aren't convinced? Get them to do a Spring Pop-Up. It's a great way to see how they work before the big rush of Fall photos. FOLLOW THEIR SOCIAL MEDIA. You can get a sense of who they are by following along on social media. Really see how they interact with the community and what they stand for. Here's a link to my Instagram , I hope to see you there ;)

  • Stylish and Coordinated: Family Photo Outfit Ideas for Summer in Vancouver, BC

One of the most asked questions when people book their Vancouver family photos in the summer is: "what should I wear?!" Keep in mind, when you book your family portrait session with me, you get a full wardrobe consult. What does that mean? It's one less thing on your to-do list! Beyond colours and styles, there are a number of other things to consider when choosing your outfits! When picking outfits for your Vancouver family photos, there are several things to consider to ensure that everyone looks (and feels) their best: Considerations for putting together your family's outfits: Location Coordination Comfort Timelessness Personal Style Season and Weather Inspiration for your next family photo session Beachy Chic: Coastal Breezes and Linen Bold and Bright: Summer's Palette in Your Wardrobe Urban Cool: The City's Pulse in Your Style Classic Elegance: Timeless Looks for Everlasting Memories Choosing Outfits that Complement Vancouver's Landscape Consider where the photos will be taken and choose outfits that complement the surroundings. For example, if the photos are taken outdoors in a natural setting, you might want to choose outfits with earthy or muted tones to blend in with the surroundings. I recommend avoiding neons, graphic t-shirts, baseball caps and colours that will distract from the natural settings - unless that's your signature style, then embrace a pop of colour! Coordinating Family Outfits for a Unified Look Consider coordinating outfits with the other family members to ensure that the overall look is cohesive. You don't necessarily have to wear matching outfits, but it's important to choose colors and styles that complement each other. Comfort Meets Style: Selecting Outfits for Effortless Movement Choose outfits that are comfortable and allow for ease of movement, especially if the photo shoot involves a lot of walking or standing. Avoid outfits that are too tight or restrictive. Timeless Charm: Opting for Classic Styles in Family Photos Consider choosing outfits that are timeless and won't look dated in a few years. Avoid trends that may not stand the test of time. Personalizing Your Family Photo Outfits Choose outfits that reflect your personal style and make you feel confident and comfortable. Don't be afraid to add a personal touch, such as a favorite accessory or piece of jewelry. Dressing for the Weather in Metro Vancouver Consider the season and weather conditions for the day of the photoshoot. If it's going to be hot and humid, it's best to avoid heavy and warm clothing. If it's going to be chilly, consider layering up to stay warm and comfortable. Overall, the most important thing to consider when picking outfits for family photos is that everyone feels comfortable, confident, and happy with their chosen attire. Family Photo Outfit Ideas for Summer in Vancouver, BC When the sun shines bright and the days stretch long, it's the perfect time to capture those cherished moments with a family photo shoot. If you're in Metro Vancouver, BC, the natural landscapes provide a stunning backdrop that deserves equally stunning attire. Here are some summer family photo outfit ideas that not only cater to the camera but also resonate with #summervibes: Beachy Chic: Coastal Breezes and Linen Soak in the West Coast essence with outfits that reflect Vancouver's relaxed beach culture. Opt for breathable fabrics like linen or cotton that keep you cool under the summer sun. Picture your family in harmonious shades of white, beige, or soft pastels, embodying the tranquil beach palette. Ladies can don flowing sundresses, while gentlemen can keep it crisp with light-coloured chinos paired with airy button-ups. Don't shy away from accessorizing with wide-brimmed hats or pastel scarves, adding a dash of personality to your 'beachy chic' ensemble. Bold and Bright: Summer's Palette in Your Wardrobe Let your family's outfits sing with the season by incorporating vibrant hues that mirror summer's exuberance. Clad yourselves in eye-catching shades like hot pink, electric turquoise, or sunny coral. Engage in a playful dance of patterns—stripes, florals, or polka dots—to capture the essence of summer's lively spirit. These 'bold and bright' family photo outfit ideas in summer ensure that your family's energy pops against the lush Vancouver landscapes. Urban Cool: The City's Pulse in Your Style For families who thrive in the city's heartbeat, 'urban cool' is your go-to style. Blend in with Vancouver's metropolitan allure with modern and slightly edgy outfits. Think denim with a twist, graphic tees that speak volumes, or even chic leather jackets for those cooler summer evenings. Accessorise with bold statement pieces—chunky necklaces or a fedora—to add a distinctive edge to your family portraits. Classic Elegance: Timeless Looks for Everlasting Memories There's something about classic styles that give family photos a touch of elegance. For those who prefer a sophisticated flair, consider timeless pieces—a little black dress, a well-fitted blazer, or chinos paired with a crisp shirt. Women can elevate their look with pearls or a delicate watch, while men can opt for cufflinks or a sleek tie. These 'classic elegance' options are perfect for family photo outfit ideas in summer that are both graceful and immortal - yup, I just immortal when talking about family photos 😅 Collaboration is Key: Sync with Your Photographer An essential tip to tie your photoshoot together is to collaborate with your photographer. They have a keen eye for what works best in front of the lens and can offer tailored advice for your family's summer photo outfit ideas. Discuss potential themes, colour schemes, and the overall mood you wish to capture. Their professional insight can be invaluable in achieving that picture-perfect finish. By integrating these family photo outfit ideas into your summer shoot in Vancouver, you're set to create snapshots that are as timeless as they are trendy. Remember, the ultimate goal is to reflect your family's personality through your outfits while ensuring everyone feels confident and comfortable. With these tips, your summer family photos are sure to be as warm and inviting as the season itself.

  • How to Plan the Perfect Couple Maternity Photo Shoot: Ideas and Inspiration

Often people think maternity photos have to be just the expecting mom in the photos. This just isn't the case! Some of the photos you'll love the most are of the connection you share with your family as your family continues to grow. Make sure you include your other children and your partner in your next maternity session - it's a way for you to document your journey and to remember these fleeting moments. All while remembering how your newest addition kicked you - relentlessly . I'm participating in a blog circle this month and linking to an awesome article by Seattle birth photographer Becky Langseth. Check out that link at the end of the article! How to include your husband in your maternity photo session There are many ways to include your partner or family in a maternity session . Here are a few ideas: 1. Photos with your partner on the bed One of the most fun ways to include your family in your maternity session is to lay on the bed and have some fun! You're an expecting mama - what's better than laying down?! Get on the bed and lay down with your partner on your backs and hold hands in the middle. So snuggly and cute! If you have another child - put them in the middle of you two and tickle the kiddo(s) for some fun photos! 2. Get your partner to hold your pregnant tummy It's such a sweet, intimate moment when your partner feels your pregnant tummy and feels your baby moving. It's like "did you feel that?!" "they know it's you.. they're saying hi!" I will ask your partner to keep their hands moving - when hands are constantly moving they'll look more natural and comfortable - and you're more likely to get baby to respond for a sweet and natural reaction from the two of you. 3. Include other kids in your maternity photo shoot Include your older children in your maternity photos : Ask them to kiss the baby in your tummy Prompt them to gently poke mama's belly button Ask them if they can hear their baby sibling by putting their ear to mama's tummy Getting them to tell baby a secret by whispering it to mama's tummy Read a book together 4. Have a romantic moment between you and your husband Are you first time parents? Snuggly, romantic time kinda fades into the background once you've had a baby. Take advantage of this time together by holding hands or cuddling during your maternity session. Sit as close as possible (make sure your hips are touching) and ask your partner to whisper in a 'sexy' voice what they had for breakfast into your ear. Feeling their breath on your neck saying "toast and jam" in their best sexy voice is nothing short of hilarious and you'll want more of it - trust me ;) 5. Read a favourite book with the whole family Reading a favourite bed time book together as a family during a maternity photo shoot is so much fun! This pose is always a family favourite. Reading together is a great way to calm a toddler down and it gets natural and organic bonding time with the family which makes for some of the most connected and beautiful family portraits. It's also a fun way to encourage imagination and creativity - kids often become animated and excited to share their favourite books. 6. Look at your sonogram photos together Looking at your sonogram together can be a bonding experience for you and your partner, as you both get to see and learn more about your developing baby. Point out their toes, trace their face and talk about which features you hope they get from each other. • Stylish and Trendy: What to Wear for Your Family Photo Shoot in Vancouver

Your family photo shoot is a chance to capture your family's unique spirit and style, especially against the stunning backdrop of Vancouver - or even at an indoor studio in the city. Choosing what to wear is a big part of making sure those pictures look timeless and feel special. What to wear for a family photo shoot in Vancouver Are you planning a family photo shoot in Metro Vancouver? Are you vacationing in Vancouver and have no idea what to expect? Well, there's one thing you can count on in this beautiful city - the weather will be unpredictable. Rain, sun, wind, or all three, you never know what the day will bring. But don't let the weather put a damper on your styling game. With some strategic planning, you and your family can look fabulous and stay comfortable, rain or shine. In this post, I'll share some handy tips and ideas on what to wear for a family photo shoot in Vancouver - with the unpredictable weather and all! From layering to classic pieces to embracing rain gear, I've got you covered. So grab a cup of coffee, and let's dive in! Build your outfits around one person First, start with one person's outfit. Is there one person whose outfit must be worn? Like mom, for example. There's a dress she feels fabulous in and wants to wear it. Or, there's this adorable outfit that your kiddo has and you just can't give up the idea of them wearing it. Either way, pick ONE outfit and base the rest of the outfits around it. Seasonal Attire Tips for Vancouver's Weather To beat the unpredictable weather in Vancouver, layering is key in the Spring and Fall. Not only will layering protect you from sudden rain or wind but it also provides you with the option to remove layers when the sun comes out. Start with a base layer of breathable fabric such as cotton or linen, which will keep you cool in case the temperature rises. Add a mid-layer like a cardigan or light sweater that can easily be tied around your waist. Finally, top with a jacket or coat that is water-resistant or windproof. This way, you can easily adapt to any weather changes while keeping your style game strong! Layering for the Perfect Autumn Family Portrait in the Lower Mainland While layering is essential when dressing for Vancouver’s unpredictable weather, it won’t hurt to include some rain gear in your outfit choices. If your photo shoot is in April - June or Sept - October, don’t let a sudden downpour ruin your family photo session! Instead, embrace stylish rain gear that will not only keep you dry but also make a fashion statement. Invest in a raincoat that is both functional and fashionable. You can opt for a classic trench coat or a trendy parka (for those cozy Fall family photo shoots) that is both waterproof and wind-resistant. Don’t forget to bring an umbrella along as well! A clear bubble umbrella not only keeps you dry but also allows for great photo opportunities. Embracing rain gear just adds a layer of protection, so you can still look great for your family photo session. That being said, on questionable weather days I always pack my clear umbrellas for clients to use. The Perfect Outfit Combinations for Every Family Member Now that you’ve got the layering and rain gear covered, it’s time to choose classic pieces for your family’s photo session. Classic pieces never go out of style, and they look great in any setting. Think neutral colors, like navy, beige, and cream, which will look timeless and will complement the natural surroundings. Avoid neon, graphic t-shirts and baseball caps that will take away from the focus of the photo – your family. Stick to basic pieces like a tailored blazer, and slacks, crisp white shirt, or a simple dress. By choosing classic and timeless pieces, you’ll create a cohesive look that will stand the test of time. Striking the right balance between matching and personal style can be tricky. Here's how to coordinate your family's outfits without everyone looking identical. Coordinating without matching: a modern take on family outfits Gone are the days of matchy-matchy family outfits. Instead, choose a colour scheme and allow each family member to express themselves within that palette. Incorporate textures in your wardrobe Ready to take your classic pieces up a notch? Incorporate textures to add depth and dimension to your clothes, ensuring your family looks their best for the photoshoot. Textures can be anything from knitwear, denim, leather, silk, or lace. Experiment with different fabrics to create a visually appealing outfit, which will look great in the pictures. Since neutral colors work best during the photoshoot, choose textured clothes in black, navy, white, or beige for a timeless look. Adding textures to your clothes is an excellent way to incorporate your personality into the outfit without making it too loud or overbearing. For example, if you love wearing denim, opt for a denim jacket that can be layered over a simple tee or a dress. Similarly, you can wear a lace skirt with a basic blouse for a feminine touch. When mixing textures, make sure you create a balance, so one texture does not overwhelm the other.
